PLEASE SUPPORT OUR CAUSE

9th – 13th June

✪ Across the week at People First, we have been talking and thinking about Carer’s Week. Carers can be a very important part of a person with learning disabilities lives, as people living at home with their families and people who are supported living often need carers to support them to live as independently as possible.

We have talked about the difference between paid and unpaid carers, whether family members can be carers too, and making some thank-you cards to give to our carers!

Want to read more about Carers’ Week? Check out this short piece written by a carer who works with us about some of the struggles of being an unpaid carer and what people can do to recognise and support their work.

✪ Wednesday saw the podcast team uploading our interview with Dean Williams and Adam McEvoy, the Chairman and England Coach of the Wheelchair Football Association! This was a fantastic interview for the podcast as it combines two of our biggest loves at PFKC: accessibility and football!

We all had a lot of fun speaking to Adam and Dean about powerchair football!

You can listen to the episode HERE!

✪ We continued doing work at both the University of Bradford and Airedale Hospital!

✪ Thursday saw the Creative Project continuing with the second week of the creative writing session run by our volunteer Susan!

This week, the members focused in themselves – coming up with words to describe themselves, as well as words for different emotions they feel.  They then used these words to write descriptive sentences about themselves, learning about metaphors and and starting to write these into poems!

✪ And on Friday, Charlotte recorded the second episode of her Talk Show, asking our manager Catrina some different questions!

Charlotte’s Talk Show will be releasing soon on our social media pages so make sure to follow us!

✪ Debra also took a few members up to the Airedale Centre for work experience volunteering at the Chromosome Rocks Charity shop!

Our members have been coming here every Friday morning for a few weeks now, doing several jobs while there from sorting, putting items out, pricing stock, making displays within the store and some have had a chance at serving customers!

They have really enjoyed learning new skills and been able to help other charities out.

✪ And to end our week, we were visited by Justin, a community support officer from the West Yorkshire Police! He spoke to all of us about his work to support people with disabilities in our communities as well as discussing our Safer Streets work!

We got the chance to speak to him on the podcast, so make sure to keep yours eyes 👀 out for that episode to learn more!
