It has been another busy week at People First Keighley and Craven! Our members have been out and about doing lots of different events, our podcast team has been busy doing interviews, and there has been lots of fun in between!
✪ Our week started with the October Board Meeting, which is attended by all available members as they are the people who make up our Board of Trustees!
These board meetings are supported by our management team, CEO Catrina and Organisational Manager Janet, as well as an independent advisor who supports the members to understand everything on the agenda and when important issues need to be voted on.
As always we were very happy to hear from the staff in their board reports to learn about all the different work everyone has been doing over the last month as well as our fantastic Chairperson, Vice-Chair and Treasurer… who are all also members!
The rest of the week members who couldn’t attend the meeting itself went over the minutes from the board meeting to make sure any changes and votes made are understood by all our members.
✪ We have also been Autumn-ing up our office with some beautiful pumpkin and tree inspired decorations!
✪ It was a very special show released on the People First Podcast this week because instead of being an interview done by our usual team, we instead had 2 amazing guests having a conversation about advocacy, lived experience of disability, the social model of disability and lots more!
We would like to introduce… Nadia Clarke and Doctor Amy Kavanagh!
Nadia, who is one of the fantastic team of volunteers who helps the support the office and work with the members throughout the week, wrote lots of great questions to ask Dr Amy!
✪ In the afternoon the podcast team were back recording a new episode! Featuring one of the speakers we met at the Taking Good Care of Yourself event in Central Hall in September – Darren, from the Bradford Council Public Health team!
We wanted to speak to Darren to learn more about the work that public health does for people in West Yorkshire – like how they can support people with disabilities, the different campaigns they promote with My Health Living, and how they support people’s mental health as well as their physical health.
This recording was also special as it was our newest podcast member, Tyler’s first recording! And he did an absolutely fantastic job! So we are very excited to share that with you all next week.
✪ We also had an out of office trip going on all about the Creative Project!
Staff member Adam went with members Martin and Jason supported by volunteer Susan to the Evaluation and Feedback event at Bradford Live, to share how the Bradford 2025 funding helped our Thursday Creative Health Project sessions at PFKC!
Here is what Jason had to say about the event: “I enjoyed the speeches because they were interesting and I leaned something new about the organisations in Bradford who also had Creative Health funding.”
✪ A fantastic example of self advocacy this week has been done by our member Amy, who let People First know that she had a big hospital appointment coming up that she was worried about. We were able to facilitate Amy to get in touch with the right support, which led to a very successful appointment! Amy is very happy with how it turned out and is now waiting for the results.
✪ Thursday saw our members having lots of fun doing a cheerleading dance workshop with our large pom-poms! Member Sarah led this first on Wednesday using her cheerleading work from outside our office and it was a very fun workout for us all to join in on.
✪ On Friday morning we continued doing work about the love project by talking round the table about different things we love! Places we love to go, objects we love, family members we love and more. 💖
✪ And we had an extra spooky end to the day with a reading around the table of our Halloween video script! Catrina has been working on it with Lizzie and it was a lot of fun for everyone starring in it to read it for the first time! 🎃
