2nd – 6th June
It’s been another bank holiday week this week! But we have still had a full and busy week at PFKC!
✪ This week our members have been discussing ideas for different articles for our new PFKC Zine, all about the upcoming Inclusive Wellbeing Festival! We all enjoyed making pages for last year’s zine and have had fun coming up with some new ideas.
✪ This week, we had 2 episodes released for our podcasts!
On the People First Podcast our team released our interview with Trevor, the team leader at the self-advocacy organisation VoiceAbility! We really enjoyed speaking to him about why self advocacy organisations are important for empowering people with learning disabilities.
AND on the PFKC Podcast Corner, our interview with local author and Manchester university lecturer Susan Barker released!
✪ The Thursday group started the second section of our creative project! After the amazing four weeks of music sessions with Adam, one of our team of volunteers Susan has started her sessions all about creative writing – where we learned about syllables in words, which helped us to write haiku poems!
The main theme of the session was belonging – what groups we all belong to, as well as talking about how being in those groups makes us feel. Using this, the members wrote down different things that they enjoy at People First to use as ingredients for a spell to make People First magic!
Even though this work was very new, it was fantastic to see everyone get involved and having fun! We are very excited to see what Susan’s second session has to offer.
✪ To finish off our week, Podcast Lead Adam went with team members Matthew, Charlotte and Nathan travelled to Bradford to visit SNOOP, a local charity and day service that also supports adults with learning disabilities as well as children! They interviewed some of the staff and members to learn more about the work they do.
To learn more about the trip and the recording, here is a short piece from podcast member Matthew!
My Review of our Podcast Interview with Snoop
By Matthew Holgate
On Friday 6th June we went to visit and interview SNOOP in Shipley. I thought the interview was a big success we found out that SNOOP are not that different from us at PFKC. We have more similarities than differences.
Snoop are a good organisation with the same values that we have that they are welcoming accept anyone who has a learning disability and or is neurodiverse that the people who go enjoy being with friends and the staff who work there. SNOOP were asking us about what we did and the members. We said we all have different roles within the organisation and that we are a self-advocacy organisation run by adults who have a learning disability or autism.
SNOOp ,. are hoping to give their members more roles within their organisation. I enjoyed helping to interview the members and staff at Snoop.
