10th – 14th February 2025
✪ Across this week, our volunteer Molly has been leading a session about the Mental Capacity Act! Our members have been learning about what the act is, how it applies to people with learning disabilities, and what “capacity” means for all of us individually! It has been so amazing seeing everyone engaging in the session and having a fun time working with Molly.
They have all received certificates at the end of the doing the training which everyone has enjoyed!
✪ We have also been having a week of celebrating our friends and colleagues for Galentine’s and Valentine’s Days! We have been doing a lot of fun crafting to make cards for our friends and family in lots of different ways.
✪ Wednesday saw the release of the new episode of the People First Podcast, which was about women’s health! Podcast hosts Charlotte and Caitlin with new speaker Lindsey were joined by a returning guest – the nurse Julie Hodgins, who we have worked with before at Healthier Lives meetings as well as having her on the podcast in 2023! We learned a lot of interesting information from her that we would like to share.

✪ We also had another session with students at Airedale Hospital! Our regular speakers Sarah B, Martin and Tom were joined by Luke this month to talk about the importance of communication and different communication methods when people with learning disabilities are in hospital. We had a brilliant session like always and are so proud of members coming to help lead the presentation!
✪ One of our volunteers Alina also sent us a video about the Chinese Lantern Festival, which is the last day of Chinese New Year. She gave us a lot of information about why the lantern festival is celebrated, different celebrations that are done on the day, as well as her memories from celebrating the festival! We had so much fun watching it that we played it on other days, which everyone enjoyed.
✪ On Thursday and Friday our podcast members Graeme, Wayne, Alex, Daniel and Shannon were recording their sections for next week’s podcast episode all about accessible information! This is a topic we are very passionate about at People First and we are excited to cover it on the show.
✪ And on Friday, we finished the voting for this month’s social night! And our members have decided… we will be going to Balti House in Keighley on Thursday 28th February from 6:30pm! Stay tuned in to our social media pages for more information soon.
