PLEASE SUPPORT OUR CAUSE

This week at People First Keighley and Craven...

14th September – 18th October 2024

✪ This week, the members of the People First Podcast have been working on our Halloween special for this year! We are very excited to be sharing this episode as our final show of the month on Wednesday 30th October, so make sure to stayed tuned for it!

✪ Tuesday saw something very cool happening after work! Our manager Catrina got the chance to be interviewed on BCB Radio, the local community radio for the Bradford area, to talk about our Safer Streets event!

If you missed the show and want to hear it, you can find the interview (Catrina is on about 5 minutes in) on the BCB website HERE!

✪ On Wednesday we held our Safer Streets event at Central Hall!

This event has been a very important project for us, as because we are a hate crime reporting centre it is very important for us that people with learning disabilities feel safe in our communities and that they know how to get support if they don’t. Working together with the Bradford Hate Crime Alliance to celebrate Hate Crime Awareness Week this week, the Safer Streets event was born!

The event was set up incredibly by our staff member Debra, who also contacted many of the groups and organisations who attended the event! She was supported by our amazing staff team to organise and promote the event, as well as many of our incredible members – who supported the event in so many ways, from taking photos on the day, sharing posters out in the community, to creating and presenting a Fire Marshal plan to make sure everyone at the event would be safe!

There were fantastic presentations from Frazer from BHCA, Jo from Safer Bradford about the importance of safeguarding, Chris Beanland from Beanland Taekwon-Do about self defence and de-escalating conflicts, a Community Support Officer from the West Yorkshire Police about why its so important to report hate crimes and incidents, as well as a speech from Keighley’s Deputy Mayor!

There were lots of different safety items and leaflets for people to come get with lots of really useful information on it. We hope everyone who attended it enjoyed the session and learned a lot!

✪ The newest episode of the People First Podcast featuring the local charity Magpies was also released!

Image shows 3 Zoom screens, one screen shows 8 people sat around in a circular table. Most of them have learning disabilities. They are all looking at the camera and smiling. In another screen there are 3 men with learning disabilities with headphones on, sat at a black table with microphones in front of them. They are looking at the camera and smiling. The third screen shows 2 people looking at the camera and waving. Poster text reads: "The People First Podcast, Season 3, Episode 37, Magpies. Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and our website."

✪ On Thursday, we recorded a very special podcast episode! We got the chance to speak to Antony from the People Powered Press, who worked with us during our visit to the press in September! All our members enjoyed asking him questions and learning more about the People Powered Press – as well as discussing some upcoming work we will be doing with them! 😮
