This week at People First Keighley and Craven…

✧ We became members of the Hidden Disability Sunflower scheme! We are excited about how this will enhance the service we offer our community!

✧ Monday saw the Podcast Team interviewing two people from SELFA Children’s Charity in Skipton – Lucy, the Senior Children and Young People’s Worker and Sophie, a member and volunteer! They learned a lot about the charity, what it offers to children with learning disabilities, and how adults over 18 can get involved through volunteering!

✧ Members Adrian and Tracey travelled around to the office of candidate Robbie Moore to ask him to take part in a People First Keighley and Craven Question Time! We have invited all the candidates and have had one reply so far from John Grogan agreeing to come.

The election is coming around so quickly that there’s not much time for people with learning disabilities (and those without) to understand the differences between the candidates. This means people may not want to vote.

We want them to tell us what they plan to do for our community of disabled people.

✧ We also got a visit from Omar and Sue, two workers from Bradford Talking Media and Keighley Healthy Living, who joined in on our work that day and talked with our members! We saw them again this week on Thursday we enjoyed having them in the office.

✧ Other members of the Podcast Team also recorded a conversation all about voting! We hope to share more about this project soon…

✧ On Wednesday some of our members went to give another presentation about communication at Bradford University! This time Stephen B, Amy, Martin and Sarah B went with our manager Catrina to discuss supporting people with learning disabilities and those on the neurodiverse spectrum. They were all very happy at how much the group engaged with our talk and it has made us excited for future sessions there along with Bradford People First!

✧ The podcast team had another interview on Wednesday with Rhiannon Lambert, a top nutritionist who runs the company Rhitrition! They asked about her new book, The Science of Plant-Based Nutrition, what inspired her to start her business and how nutrition advice be made more accessible for people with disabilities. It was very interesting talking to her and we’re grateful that she took the time out to come on the People First Podcast! We highly recommend listening to her podcast it is so informative!

✧ Thursday saw Graeme and Alex, two of our members, attending a meeting in Central Hall about the future of Keighley. They attended it alongside a lot of other groups and it gave them a chance to discuss how they think the local area can be made more accessible!

✧ On Thursday afternoon we also popped up with some positivity at the Airedale Centre in Keighley! Our volunteers Susan and Alina helped us at the event, where we celebrated carers with people from Modality, Keighley Healthy Living and Carer’s Resource. We really appreciate the hard work of all our volunteers! 💙

✧ On Friday, Angus and Ben and members ran an awesome session about what does a learning disability actually mean, this is in preparation for Learning Disability Week next week.

✧ And lastly staff members Catrina and Adam attended a meeting with our Co-Chair Daniel Jones and Duncan from Dimensions about some co production opportunities, which were very exciting!
